Programme
This programme brings together some of the most evocative works in the keyboard and chamber repertoire, moving gracefully from Baroque grandeur to Romantic intimacy and Impressionist colour. It opens with the dramatic sweep of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, a work whose bold gestures and intricate counterpoint have fascinated listeners for centuries. From this commanding beginning, the mood softens into the reflective glow of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata, where quiet contemplation gradually gives way to storm‑lit passion.
A shift into the shimmering world of Debussy introduces moments of poetic stillness and playful character: the moonlit tenderness of Clair de Lune, the witty portraits of Minstrels and Général Lavine, and the spirited charm of Golliwog’s Cakewalk. Chopin’s Nocturne in C‑sharp minor deepens the atmosphere with its blend of melancholy lyricism and expressive warmth.
The programme then turns toward Maltese musical identity with Joseph Vella’s Rapsodija Maltija, a vibrant and heartfelt tribute to local colour and tradition. To close, two beloved four‑hand works bring a sense of joy and camaraderie: Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5, full of fiery rhythms and irresistible energy, and Schubert’s Marche Militaire, whose buoyant spirit and melodic charm offer a delightful, uplifting finale.
