Description

For the third year running, the fire and soul of Andalusia returns to Malta. Puerto Flamenco, the Seville-based company directed by Malta's own Francesca Grima "La Chica" and percussionist Andrej Vujicic, brings an all-new show to Teatru Salesjan with a cast drawn from the heart of Seville's flamenco scene.

Francesca "La Chica", one of the first international dancers to perform in many of Seville's important Tablaos, has spent over a decade leading Puerto Flamenco across stages from WOMAD to the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Sziget Festival in Budapest to the Södra Teatern in Stockholm. Andrej, who has collaborated with leading flamenco figures including Familia Montoya, Belén Maya, and Pastora Galván, holds the rare distinction of being the first cajón player to perform in a Seville tablao.

Joining them this year is dancer Juan del Puerto, born in Cádiz and based in Seville, is one of the most electrifying rising stars of contemporary flamenco, a dancer of striking presence, elegance, and raw fire. Juan has rapidly earned major acclaim, winning top awards such as La Perla de Cádiz and Festival de Ubrique, and dazzling audiences from Spain to Japan, the USA, and Canada, premiering his acclaimed work De Los Puertos at the Festival de Jerez. A magnetic performer in Seville’s most prestigious tablaos, Juan embodies the beauty, intensity, and future of flamenco today.

Proudly presenting Cristina Tovar, one of the most powerful and emotive voices of her generation, trained under masters such as José de la Tomasa and Arcángel, and now a sought-after artist on the Seville circuit. On guitar, legendary accompanist Rubén Romero, a Sevillano who has played for Farruquito and Juan de Juan, Rafael de Utrera at the Bienal de Sevilla, the Festival de las Minas, and beyond. The two already share a proven creative chemistry, most recently at Tovar's acclaimed solo recital at the Peña Flamenca Torres Macarena earlier this year.

Completing the cast is cantaor Tremendo Hijo, born José Javier Guerrero Hernández in Triana, Seville, into one of flamenco's great family lines. Brother to the celebrated Rosario "La Tremendita" and a regular at tablaos including El Arenal and the Museo del Baile Flamenco, he brings the deep, inherited weight of Triana's singing tradition.

Cabaret tables for four are set up in front of the stage for those who want to be close enough to hear the dancers breathe. High tables with stools line the balcony for a more relaxed vantage point, with traditional parterre and balcony seating also available. Fresh paella will be cooked on site, and after the final footwork, a DJ keeps the night going.

This event is organised with the support of the Spanish Embassy in Malta, Visit Malta, Elmo Insurance, Arts Council Malta and Costa Consulta.
