Weather


The weather in Malta during December is mild compared to much of Europe, making it an appealing destination for those looking to escape harsher winter conditions. Daytime temperatures are usually around 16 - 18°C (61 - 64°F), offering a cool but comfortable environment for outdoor activities. While rain is likely, it often comes in short bursts, leaving plenty of sunny intervals in between. At night, temperatures range between 10 - 12°C (50 - 54°F). Malta can be breezy in December, with winds coming from the northwest. The occasional strong gust may add to the chill, particularly along the coast, therefore, keep a light jacket and scarf at hand.


Religious Celebrations


For those seeking a very traditional and spiritual experience, the Christmas Eve procession that takes to Malta’s streets — with a life-sized baby Jesus — is a colourful local tradition, while the Maltese “Sermon of the Child” sees pint-sized speakers address those attending Midnight Mass. held in churches across the islands. Other traditions include crèches, nativities, or cribs. These advent-themed displays play a major part in Christmas celebrations all over the world. Found on every street corner across the city, these nativity scenes are among the most popular and important Maltese traditions. The Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem is a very popular live nativity scene that turns part of Gozo into a full, biblically-inspired village.

Culinary delights


On Christmas Eve, after the Midnight Mass, a sweet “soup” of chocolate, chestnuts, and orange peel known as Imbuljuta tal-Qastan. Additionally, mince pies have become a cherished part of the Maltese Christmas, and are a true nod to the British influence in Malta. These pies, filled with chopped dried fruit and spices, are a delightful treat, that are often enjoyed with a cup of tea. Other sweets treats include mqaret, qagħaq tal-għasel, christmas cake and the ever-popular christmas logs!
